BETA CELL AGING LAB
Joslin Diabetes Center

The Beta Cell Aging Lab aims to understand the contribution of cellular aging to diabetes in animal and human models of disease to find new therapeutic targets that can reverse dysfunction and early cellular death.
Principal Investigator
Cristina Aguayo-Mazzucato MD PhD
Born in Barcelona, Spain, she received her MD degree in General Medicine and her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the UNAM. In 2007 she joined the laboratory of Prof. Susan Bonner-Weir at Joslin Diabetes Center as a postdoctoral fellow studying beta-cell functional development and developed strategies that enhance functional maturity in vitro for cellular replacement therapies for diabetes.
In July 2019 she established the Beta Cell Aging Lab at Joslin Diabetes Center which aims to understand the molecular progression of senescence and identify alleviating strategies that have a positive impact in the prevention and treatment of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.
